The Australian public research university Monash University was established in 1958 in Melbourne. The institution, the second-oldest in Victoria, was named after a well-known World War I general named Sir John Monash.

Monash University, one of Melbourne, Australia's finest universities, has been placed 48th by US News & World Report for 2021. Times Higher Education has placed the university at number 64, an increase from its previous position of 74 in 2017. The university was ranked 55 by QS World University Rankings in 2021, an increase from its previous level of 65 in 2017; similarly, the ARWU Shanghai Ranking gave the university an 85 ranking for 2020. While Times Higher Education (THE) accords equal weight to Teaching, Research, and Citations at 30% each, QS places the greatest emphasis on Academic Reputation (40%) followed by the Faculty/Student Ratio and Citations per Faculty at 20% each. In addition to other rating factors, the US News & World Report bases its rankings on the number of publications cited, global research reputation, and regional research reputation (12.5% each). In the Shanghai ranking, institutions are ranked based on the calibre of academic research they generate and the number of Nobel Prizes their faculty have earned rather than on their reputation among academics or employers.

Course Ranking

At Monash University, various departments, including the Department of Forensic Medicines, the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, and the Department of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, among others, teach undergraduate and graduate courses. The faculties of engineering, law, the arts, business, economics, health sciences, and IT are on campus.

According to the QS Subject Ranking, Monash University is placed 36 among universities for studying accounting and finance in 2020 and 73 for studying a global MBA. According to Times Higher Education (THE), the university's PG Business and Economics programme is number 67.

Monash University's engineering programme received a ranking of 54 from QS Subject Ranking for its undergraduate engineering programme and 71 from THE for its postgraduate engineering programme.
