When applying, the Graduate School advises that applicants have a 3.0 GPA or "B" average. The UMBC Graduate School will accept official WES (World Education Services) ICAP Course-by-Course evaluations for transcripts from schools outside the United States, but these evaluations are not needed.

Students who do not reach the minimal GPA requirements can still be admitted to graduate school if they excel on one or more of the graduate aptitude exams or provide letters of recommendation from assessors who can attest to their success as a student or in a professional position.

Admission requirements for a doctoral programme are often greater than those for a master's programme. The conditions of this admission are based on specific recommendations from the applicant's department and the Graduate School.
