Living in Heidelberg is desirable. Particularly in March/April and September/October at the start of each semester, there is a high demand for furnished apartments and rooms. In comparison to other German cities, Heidelberg has expensive rents. It is advised to look for lodging in advance, preferably several months before travelling to Heidelberg.

For visiting scholars and their families, Heidelberg University offers four guesthouses. Apartments range in size from one to four rooms, and some are accessible to those with disabilities.
