A public university, East Carolina University (ECU) was founded in 1907. Having a campus size of 1600 acres, this university is located in Greenville, North Carolina. The university provides on-campus accommodation for its students. The Division of Student Affairs takes care of the residence life. There are 15 types of college residence halls as well as College Hill Suites (CHS) available only for upper-division students. All the rooms in the residence halls include amenities bankable beds, air conditioning, and a small fridge. The ECU housings maintain a tobacco-free environment. The university campus has over 500 student organizations which include organizations in the field of tourism, hospitality, and sports management.The students on campus are also allowed to participate in outdoor adventure trips, fitness classes which include yoga, pilates, and various sports events. The fees including tuition fees, room and board, books and supplies, personal expenses, transportation, and loan fees for the undergraduate program is 39,592 USD and the graduate program is 34,758 USD. To be eligible for freshman admission, you must have completed the following courses when you graduated from high school:

English: 4 course units focusing on grammar, composition, and literature in English.
Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a higher level mathematics course with Algebra II as a requirement.
Natural Sciences: A living or biological science, a physical science, and a laboratory science are included in the three course units.
Two course units in social studies are required, one of which must be US history.
Two course units of a language other than English are required. Both have to be written in the same language (i.e., Spanish 1 & 2). Both American Sign Language and Latin are accepted at ECU.

We strongly advise you to study a foreign language, mathematics, and a natural science course in addition to English during your senior year. These courses will better prepare you for the curriculum of your freshman year.

Admission Process

The following items are included in a comprehensive freshmen application: $75 nonrefundable application fee Official high school transcript with current grade point average on a 4.0 scale and senior year courses in progress. Transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended, including dual enrollment at a community college.


This policy was developed by ECU in order to increase student retention. Students who live on campus return to school the next year at a higher rate and have a higher GPA than those who live off campus their first year.

By submitting this waiver, the student will be required to enrol in a section of COAD 1000, ECU's freshman seminar class, in the first semester that they are living at home under the freshman residency exception. Under the freshman residency exemption, they will also be forced to purchase a Gold 450 meal plan (or greater) each semester of enrollment in order to better engage with the school and other freshmen.
