Placements

The placement will usually occur during the academic year (October to May), as though it were split into two semesters at the university. As a result, it should typically last between 24 and 40 weeks, with no less than 20 weeks and no more than 40 weeks.

All students must attend placement during the setting's typical full-time working hours. Any exceptions to this rule will have been discussed with the university and disclosed to the placement provider before the placement begins.

Each student will be assigned a mentor in the setting who will support them while they are on placement. This person should ideally be a member of staff with whom the student will likely interact daily. A University placement supervisor will pay a visit to the student and mentor in the setting (typically once during the placement) and will stay in touch and support each student.

Placement Assessment:

As part of the module, students will be assessed. There are three parts to the evaluation. Each component is graded solely on a pass/fail basis, and each element must be passed to pass the module. The following are the components of the evaluation:

  • The module leader or placement supervisor and the placement host must review and agree on the placement specification created by the student. This will detail the aims and plan for the placement
  • Before the end of the first semester (about halfway through the placement), the student will produce a progress report that will reflect their work thus far, as well as an updated placement plan
  • A learning log will be kept as a diary of the student's actions and experiences during the placement. The remarks and input from their mentor at the placement-providing organisation will also be included. Students are asked to submit one entry every 3 to 4 weeks during their placement. At the end of the placement, this will be evaluated
