Placements

You are responsible for your placement opportunities, but the Placement staff and your Department will be there to support and assist you throughout the process. They can help you with CVs, applications, and interview methods, among other things. Contact the Placements Team at placements@essex.ac.uk for more information.

Many large corporations and organisations advertise work placements with good development possibilities around the country, and many small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are also increasingly hiring placement students.

The following are examples of different sorts of placements:

  • A placement year (equivalent to a year of academic study, completed between the penultimate and final years of your undergraduate programme) contributes toward your degree
  • Termly assignments (equal to a 12- to 15-week academic term that might be part-time or coupled with academic studies) may be appropriate for specific modules in your degree
  • Extracurricular vacation placements/internships (short-term positions conducted during vacations) that do not count toward your degree but provide a good experience
  • Initiatives (negotiated pieces of work, either group-based or individual, usually carried out in the third year of undergraduate study)
