A Duolingo 100 therefore sits in the same band as an IELTS 6.0 in their eyes, not below it.

Any row marked verify directly means exactly that: the university states a level, not a list. Email the admissions office with your program name and ask whether the Duolingo English Test is accepted and at what score. Do not rely on an aggregator table, and do not rely on what a friend was told two intakes ago.

Counselor insight: When you email, ask for the answer in writing and keep it. Hungarian admissions teams are responsive, but an answer given on a phone call is worth nothing if a different officer reviews your file three months later.

Why the Answer Differs from University to University in Hungary

Hungary has no central catalogue of acceptable English certificates, so each institution sets its own rule.

This is the opposite of Poland, where a 2025 ministerial regulation created a fixed national list that every university must apply to non-EU applicants. In Hungary, the Ministry sets no such list, and a university is free to name specific tests, state a CEFR level and leave the tests open, or assess your English inside its own entrance examination.

The University of Debrecen is a good example of the middle approach. It requires that language proficiency be proven with a standardised, at least upper-intermediate (B2) level language certificate obtained at a proctored exam, and then adds that exemptions may be granted on the basis of certain other educational certificates submitted with the application. That wording gives the admissions committee room to judge, which is useful if your case is unusual and frustrating if you want a number before you book a test.

Counselor insight: This decentralisation is why two consultants can give you opposite answers about the same Hungarian university and both believe they are right. One is quoting a 2023 email, the other a 2025 one. Ask the university, not the internet.

When Indian Students Do Not Need Any English Test for Hungary

A large share of Indian applicants to Hungary never need a Duolingo or IELTS score at all.

The University of Debrecen exempts applicants who are native speakers of English or who have completed their secondary or higher education in English, in which case a medium of instruction certificate is required as proof of proficiency instead. For Indian students from CBSE, ICSE, most state boards and almost every Indian university, this covers you.

Corvinus goes further at master’s level, stating that applicants are not required to submit an English language proficiency certificate, with the exception of the Management and Leadership integrated CEMS program.

The medium of instruction route has one weak point, and it is on the Indian side. Your college must issue a letter that clearly states English was the language of instruction for your program, on letterhead, signed and stamped. Indian institutions issue this in wildly inconsistent formats, and a letter that only says “the course was conducted in English medium” without naming your program and dates often gets sent back.

Counselor insight: Request the medium of instruction letter at the same time as your final transcript, not after. Once you have graduated and left campus, getting a non-standard letter out of an Indian examination section can take six weeks, and that is usually longer than simply sitting a test would have taken.

Does Duolingo work for MBBS and Health Programs in Hungary

For Hungarian medical and health programs, the entrance examination matters more than the certificate.

Hungary’s medical universities, including Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged and Semmelweis, admit international students through written and oral entrance examinations in subjects such as biology and chemistry or physics, and English proficiency is assessed as part of that process for several health programs rather than through a submitted score alone. A Duolingo score can support your file, but it will not substitute for the exam.

Two practical points for Indian applicants. First, competition is now heavy enough that programs close early: Debrecen stopped accepting applications for medicine and dentistry for the September 2026 intake because of an exceptionally high number of applications received. Second, Debrecen applies study gap limits, with a maximum gap of six years for medical applicants to foundation, undergraduate and one-tier graduate programs, and four years for non-medical undergraduate applicants.

Counselor insight: If medicine in Hungary is your plan, treat the entrance exam as the real gate and book your test months earlier than you think you need to. Students who spend three months perfecting a Duolingo score and two weeks on biology revision have their priorities backwards.

Does the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Accept Duolingo

Stipendium Hungaricum does not set its own English test list, so the answer routes straight back to your chosen university.

The program is managed by Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and coordinated by Tempus Public Foundation, and is built on bilateral educational cooperation agreements with more than 90 sending partners. Its published criteria are that applicants must be citizens of eligible countries with a valid nomination from the national authorities responsible for higher education, must meet the entry requirements of the selected study program and host institution, and must have the required language proficiency as specified by the university.

That last clause is the one that matters here. If your host institution accepts Duolingo, your Stipendium Hungaricum application can use it. If the institution does not name it, you need one of the tests it does accept, or a medium of instruction certificate.

For Indian applicants there is a second track running in parallel: you must be nominated by India’s designated sending partner, and the nomination process has its own criteria and deadlines that sit alongside the Tempus application. Our Stipendium Hungaricum guide for Indian students covers that side in detail.

Counselor insight: Students lose this scholarship on the nomination step, not the language step. Applying only on the Tempus portal and assuming the nomination happens automatically is the single most common mistake, and it is unrecoverable once the deadline passes.

What this Costs Indian Students in Rupees

The Hungarian immigration fees are set in forint. Extending a residence permit costs Rs.6,900 (HUF 23,000).

On top of that, budget for the university application fee, which at Debrecen is 150 USD and non-refundable, your English test if you need one, apostille and translation charges, health insurance and the Type D visa fee.

Exchange rate used: Rs.0.30 per Hungarian forint. Work on the weakest subscore using a Duolingo practice test rather than retaking blind.

Your college will not issue a proper medium of instruction letter. Stop chasing it and book a test.
