class="ez-toc-section-end">

There is no official University of Twente acceptance rate. The university does not publish one, and there is no admission statistic on utwente.nl, on any faculty page or any admissions page. Every percentage you have seen for this university was produced by somebody else.

Figure quoted

Where it appears

Stated basis

Status

51%

Ranking sites, Indian aggregators, consultancy blogs

Calculated from a ratio of admissions to applications plus circumstantial enrolment data

Third-party estimate. The 51% figure is the one that spread furthest, and the site that calculated it says openly that different programs may have significantly varying admission rates and that the number should not be treated as a measure of your chances. That caveat gets stripped every time the figure is copied, until it appears on Indian study-abroad pages described as the university’s official acceptance rate. It is not.

Counselor insight: Students bring a screenshot of the 51% figure into counselling sessions and ask whether their profile beats it. There is nothing to beat. No number in that screenshot was produced by Twente, and Dutch admission is not a ranked competition where you are measured against the rest of the pool.

Why the University of Twente Acceptance Rate Is the Wrong Question in the Dutch System

Dutch university admission is eligibility-based. You are assessed against a published threshold, not against the other applicants. If your prior education, grades, and English score meet the stated requirement, and the admission committee judges your subject background relevant, you are admissible. Nobody is ranking you against a queue.

The exception is numerus fixus programs, which have a capped number of places and run a formal selection procedure. Those are capped bachelor’s programs, and at UT they include English-taught tracks such as psychology, so a bachelor’s applicant should check whether their target program carries a numerus fixus. Master’s applicants are generally not affected.

This changes what you should be measuring. There is no single University of Twente acceptance rate because there is no single bar. Two students with identical transcripts applying to different Twente master’s programs can get different outcomes, because each program sets its own specific requirement on top of the university-wide one. If you are shortlisting Dutch universities more broadly, our guides to top universities in the Netherlands and MS in the Netherlands cover how the same logic applies elsewhere.

Counselor insight: The useful comparison in the Dutch system is not your profile against last year’s admits. It is your transcript against the program page. Read the specific admission requirement on the individual program’s own site before you spend a Studielink slot on it. That single page tells you more than any university-wide percentage ever could.

What Twente Requires from Indian Applicants Instead of an Acceptance Rate

This is what replaces the missing acceptance rate, and unlike the percentages circulating online, it is published by the university itself and updated regularly.

UT sets the floor at a four-year bachelor’s with a cumulative average of 75%, which it equates to First Class. It adds that admission eligibility may also depend on whether the teaching institution is recognised as a top institution and that a three-year Bachelor’s degree will be accepted only if it is an Honours degree awarded by a top institution.

UT then defines what a top institution means, and this is the part no other page covers. Top institutions are those of national importance, institutions of eminence, or teaching institutions that held the highest NAAC accreditation at the time of graduation. UT explicitly warns that your teaching institution and your awarding institution may differ and that they may hold different NAAC grades, which could affect your admissibility.

Requirement

What it means for an Indian applicant

Where to verify

Degree length

BTech, BE and other four-year degrees clear the structure test

Your degree certificate

CGPA

Minimum 75%, stated as First Class

Your consolidated marksheet

Institution status

National importance, eminence, or highest NAAC grade at graduation

NAAC accreditation records for your college

Three-year degrees

BSc, BCom and BA accepted only as Honours from a top institution

Your degree title and college status

English test

Required and program-specific

The programme page on utwente.nl

Eligibility check

Mandatory online e-check for international degrees

utwente.nl eligibility check tool

Certified photocopies

Attested hard copies required after admission

Your university’s records office

That NAAC line matters more than it looks. A large share of Indian graduates studied at a college affiliated to a university, where the college taught them and the university awarded the degree. Those two bodies can hold different accreditation grades, and UT assesses the teaching institution. This is the single condition most likely to decide an Indian application at Twente, and it is entirely absent from the pages quoting an acceptance rate.

Counselor insight: Check the NAAC grade your teaching college held in the year you graduated, not the grade it holds today. Students assume the awarding university’s accreditation covers them. UT states directly that the two institutions may differ and that the difference can affect admissibility, so this is worth confirming before you apply rather than after a refusal.

Meeting the CGPA Does Not Mean Admission at the University of Twente

Clearing 75% does not put you in. UT states that even if you meet the CGPA, this does not mean you will be admitted, because the admission committee will also review your relevant courses and the scores you hold for those courses. A strong overall CGPA carried by non-technical electives, with weaker marks in the subjects the master’s actually builds on, is a real refusal reason.

There are three possible outcomes, not two:

Direct admission to the master’s program.

Transfer to a pre-master’s. UT says it will take your application under consideration and then transfer it to a pre-master’s program if you are not directly eligible for the master’s.

Rejection. UT notes that a rejection is valid for both the master’s and the pre-master’s, so a refusal closes both doors in that cycle.

There is also a step most applicants skip. UT requires international-degree applicants to complete an online eligibility check before applying and describes it as mandatory. It takes about five minutes and returns individual advice on your chances of being admitted to the master’s or pre-master’s of your choice. That advice is specific to your degree and your grades, which is more than any university-wide percentage can offer.

Counselor insight: Run the eligibility check before you pay anything. It is the closest thing to an official answer on your chances that exists for this university, it is free, and it is mandatory anyway. Students spend weeks arguing about a 51% figure while ignoring the tool Twente built to answer exactly the question they are asking.

Deadlines and Costs Behind the University of Twente Acceptance Rate Question

UT is explicit that your nationality determines your deadline, not your residence permit. An Indian passport holder follows the non-EEA timeline even if they already hold a European residence permit.

Stage

September 2027 intake

February 2028 intake

Applications open

1 October 2026

1 March 2027

Completed application submitted

Before 1 May 2027

Before 1 October 2027

Final certified photocopies

Before 1 September 2027

Before 1 February 2028

Exchange rate used: Rs.110.97 per EUR. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.

These are UT’s published non-EEA master’s deadlines. Some programs deviate, including those run by the ITC faculty, the GIMA program, and one psychology specialization. UT also notes that the visa and residence permit procedure only starts after you are admitted and carries its own separate deadlines, which we cover in the Netherlands student visa process guide. For how these dates sit inside the wider Dutch cycle, see intakes in the Netherlands.

On cost, one widely repeated claim is wrong. The €100 application fee is not universal. UT charges it only for master’s programs in two faculties: Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Engineering Technology, and only for applicants holding a non-Dutch degree. That is Rs.11,097 (€100), non-refundable, and your application is not reviewed until the money reaches UT. If you apply to more than one program, you pay it once. Students applying through UT’s collaboration with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham are exempt.

Two more cost facts worth knowing. A pre-master’s has no fixed fee; you pay per EC, at Rs.4,982 (€44.90) per EC for 2026-27, so a 30 EC pre-master’s runs to roughly Rs.1,49,470 (€1,347). And if you start in February, your first tuition payment covers February to August only, which is 7/12 of the annual amount. Full tuition depends on whether your program sits in UT’s higher or lower institutional rate band. Scholarship options are covered in scholarships in the Netherlands for Indian students, and Enschede living costs in cost of living in the Netherlands.

Counselor insight: The certified photocopy deadline catches Indian applicants more often than the application deadline does. Getting transcripts attested and couriered from an Indian university takes weeks, sometimes longer over exam season. An admitted student whose hard copies miss 1 September is not enrolled, and UT is clear that the application is not finished until those documents arrive.

What to Do If You Are Below the University of Twente Threshold

Your CGPA is below 75%. Check whether your target program offers a pre-master’s and whether your prior education permits entry to it. Apply if you are borderline, since UT may transfer rather than refuse, but understand that a rejection blocks both the master’s and the pre-master’s for that cycle.

You have a three-year degree without Honours. A pre-master’s or bridging year is the standard route. Universities of applied sciences assess prior education differently and are worth shortlisting alongside.

Your English test is not done yet. UT states that your application will not be considered if you have not yet taken your English language test. Retake or sit it before you apply. An incomplete file is not a weak application, it is a non-application.

Your certified photocopies are delayed. The application is not finished until they arrive, regardless of an admission decision. Start attestation eight to ten weeks before the deadline, and confirm your university’s records office turnaround before you rely on it.

You have been rejected. The rejection covers the pre-master’s as well, so a Twente reapplication in the same cycle is not available. Put your effort into a second Dutch university in the same intake instead of appealing.

Counselor insight: Applications get refused at Twente for missing documents far more often than for weak grades. UT will not review a file with a missing English result, and it will not complete one without attested hard copies. Both are administrative problems with early deadlines, and both are entirely inside your control.

3 Takeaways on University of Twente Acceptance Rate

Stop planning against the 51% figure because there is no published University of Twente acceptance rate and that number came from a third party that describes it as a rough guide.

Check the NAAC grade your teaching college held in your graduation year, since UT states the teaching and awarding institutions may hold different grades and the difference can affect your admissibility.

Run UT’s free online eligibility check before paying any application fee, because it returns individual advice on your chances and is mandatory for international-degree applicants anyway.

Verified by: LeapScholar’s Netherlands counseling team, with hands-on experience guiding Indian students through Dutch university eligibility assessments, Studielink applications and IND visa processes.

Have questions about University of Twente acceptance rate or which Dutch program fits your profile? Book a free session with a LeapScholar counselor.

Frequently Asked Questions About University of Twente Acceptance Rate

What happens if the University of Twente rejects my application?

A rejection from UT is valid for both the master’s and the pre-master’s programs, so neither route stays open in that cycle.
