class="wp-block-heading">What Is DAAD WISE?

Yes, DAAD WISE (Working Internships in Science and Engineering) is a fully funded research internship program exclusively for Indian students, run by Germany’s DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) on behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office. It places students at a publicly funded German university or non-university research institute for 2 to 3 months during the German summer, working under a professor, doctoral student, or scientist on an active research project.

WISE is the India-specific counterpart to DAAD RISE, which serves undergraduates from the US, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. The two programs are structured similarly, but WISE is built around one detail RISE does not require in the same way: you must independently secure a German professor’s written invitation before DAAD will even look at your application.

Sources: DAAD Working Internships in Science and Engineering: IndiaBioscience · DAAD India Scholarship Database

Related reading: Global internship opportunities for Indian students

DAAD WISE Eligibility: Who Can Actually Apply

Not every Indian engineering or science student qualifies. Eligibility runs on three filters, and missing any one disqualifies the application outright.

Institution: You must be enrolled at a selected DAAD WISE partner institution. This list includes the IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIITs, BITS Pilani, and a small number of other selected universities. Students at non-partner colleges are not eligible for WISE and should look at DAAD RISE Worldwide or other funded internship routes instead.

Academic stage: You must be in the 5th or 6th semester of a 4-year Bachelor’s program or the 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th semester of a 5-year integrated or dual-degree (Bachelor–Master) program at the time of application.

Field of study: Your program must fall under engineering, mathematics, or the natural sciences. Arts, humanities, social sciences, law, and medicine (MBBS) are not eligible. Biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics students at science colleges do qualify.

Note: Final-year students graduating before the internship period are not eligible, since WISE requires you to still be an enrolled student throughout the internship. If you are in your final semester with no semesters remaining after summer 2027, WISE is not open to you; look at DAAD’s Research Grants or Study Scholarships instead once you graduate.

Academically, most successful applicants report an aggregate of 85% or a CGPA of 8.5/10 or higher, though the figure isn’t a hard published cutoff; selection also weighs your host invitation, project fit, and motivation. You must not be a former WISE recipient and cannot draw funding from any other German scholarship body for the same period.

Source: DAAD Working Internships in Science and Engineering: IndiaBioscience

Related question: German language requirements and visa process for studying in Germany

The German Professor Invitation Letter: The Real Gatekeeper

DAAD does not assign you a host. You must independently find a German professor willing to supervise you, obtain a written invitation from them, and submit that invitation as part of your application. Without it, your application is incomplete and will not be reviewed, regardless of your grades.

The host must be at a publicly funded German university or a non-university research institute (Max Planck, Helmholtz, Fraunhofer, and Leibniz institutes all qualify). Private universities, private research labs, and companies are not eligible hosts under WISE, even if a professor there is willing to take you.

My insight: If you receive invitation letters from more than one professor, DAAD only accepts one. Decide early which project genuinely fits your interests and academic background, rather than collecting offers as a safety net; a mismatched project raises questions at the review stage about whether you actually understand the research you’re proposing to join.

How to Find and Email a German Professor for WISE

Build a shortlist of 12 to 15 professors, not 3 or 4. Search Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and faculty pages at universities like TUM, RWTH Aachen, Heidelberg, KIT Karlsruhe, TU Berlin, LMU Munich, and TU Stuttgart, plus Max Planck and Helmholtz institutes, for professors publishing in your research area.

Read at least one recent paper from each shortlisted professor. A generic “I am passionate about your field” email is ignored. An email referencing a specific 2025 or 2026 paper, with one precise question about it, gets read.

Write a short, specific email under 200 words, stating your year, institution, GPA, relevant coursework or project experience, which of their papers interests you and why, and what you’d want to work on. Attach your CV and latest transcript.

Start outreach in August, not October. German academics take vacation through late July and August, and the WISE portal typically opens in October. A realistic reply rate on cold outreach is roughly one in ten, so a shortlist of 12 to 15 is necessary, not excessive.

Follow up once after 10 to 14 days if you haven’t heard back, then move down your shortlist rather than waiting indefinitely.

Once a professor agrees, ask them directly for the DAAD host invitation/approval form, filled out and signed on their end, well before your submission deadline.

Source: DAAD Scholarship Database: WISE Program, official eligibility and application rules

My insight: WISE applications fail in August and September, not in November. By the time the portal opens, students who started outreach early already have their invitation letter in hand and are simply completing forms.
