QS ranks roughly 1,500 universities worldwide out of the UK’s ~160 recognised institutions. Most UK universities outside the Russell Group don’t clear that global bar, but still rank respectably on UK-only tables that measure teaching quality and graduate outcomes instead of research volume.

My insight: Families researching Cumbria almost always ask the same question first: “why can’t I find it on QS?” It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is that QS’s global methodology weighs research citations and international faculty ratios heavily, categories a small, teaching-focused university like Cumbria was never built to compete on. Judge Cumbria on the UK tables, not the absence of a global one.

University of Cumbria Ranking Has Changed Over the Years

Cumbria’s QS Europe (Northern Europe) rank has moved from #=161 in 2024, to #=159 in 2025, to #=203 in 2026, a downward trend.

Year

QS Europe (N. Track the subject-level table for your actual course instead of the overall institutional number; it moves far less and tells you more about what you’ll actually experience.

University of Cumbria Ranking by Subject for Indian Students

Cumbria’s strongest subject tables map directly onto the courses Indian applicants shortlist most: Nursing and allied health, Business, Law, and Criminology.

Subject

UK ranking

Source

Law

15th in UK (1st in North West England)

Guardian University Guide Subject Rankings 2025

Physiotherapy

17th in UK

Guardian University Guide Subject Rankings 2025

Health Professions

23rd in UK

Guardian University Guide Subject Rankings 2025

Zoology

26th in UK

Guardian University Guide Subject Rankings 2025

Business, Management & Marketing

24th in UK

Times Good University Guide (subject), Sept 2025

Business & Management

20th in UK

Guardian University Guide (subject), Sept 2025

Beyond ranked subject tables, Cumbria also holds sector-specific recognition worth knowing:

Ranked top in the UK for overall postgraduate research student experience, per the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) by AdvanceHE.

Ranked in the top 10 globally (8th of 676 institutions) in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for the UN’s Quality Education Sustainable Development Goal, and 1st in the UK on that same measure.

My insight: Cumbria is not a research-heavy institution, and its own admissions material doesn’t pretend otherwise; it markets itself on teacher training, healthcare, business, and policing/criminology outcomes. If your course sits in one of the ranked subject areas above, the subject table is the more honest predictor of your experience than the institutional number. If your course sits outside all of these, the subject data simply doesn’t exist yet, and that’s a legitimate reason to ask the admissions team directly before accepting.

University of Cumbria Fees for Indian Students: 2027 Intake

International tuition currently runs:

Level

Annual fee (GBP)

Annual fee (INR)

Undergraduate

£14,900 – £16,900

Rs.19.05L – Rs.21.61L

Postgraduate (taught)

~£13,575 – £16,900 (course-dependent)

Rs.17.36L – Rs.21.61L

MBA

Course-dependent; confirm on offer letter

–

Exchange rate used: £1 = Rs.127.88.
