the key point. Globally, Portsmouth is a mid-tier university. Nationally it is a rising one, now inside the UK top 40 on The Guardian’s table. It holds a full 5-star QS rating and a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

My insight: Indian families almost always open with the QS number and stop there. For a UK degree, UK recruiters and the UK job market pay far more attention to The Guardian, The Times, and Complete University Guide tables, where Portsmouth reads as a top-40 to top-50 institution, not a 600s one. When you assess the University of Portsmouth ranking, weigh the UK tables at least as heavily as QS.

How the University of Portsmouth Ranking Has Changed Over the Years

The QS trend is genuinely volatile. Meanwhile, THE has held Portsmouth in the 401-500 band for four straight years, and the UK tables have improved sharply. The Guardian rank rose from #41 to #35 and the Complete University Guide from #49 to #42 in a single cycle, as confirmed by the university.

Why did QS dip while everything else rose?

QS added Sustainability and Employment Outcomes indicators and reweighted its methodology. Mid-sized modern universities were reshuffled as more institutions entered the table, which pushed several UK post-92 universities down in raw position without their teaching or research actually weakening.

My insight: A falling QS number does not mean a falling university here.
