Language Proficiency Mandate (Starting 2026)<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is standardising language tests across most <strong>Open Work Permit (OWP) <\/strong>streams under the International Mobility Program (IMP)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New Requirement: <\/strong>Starting in early 2026, applicants for certain open work permits, specifically<strong> Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWP), <\/strong>will need to demonstrate English and French proficiency through official tests like IELTS or CELPIP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purpose: <\/strong>This measure aims to prevent exploitation (such as fraudulent marriages) and ensure that the newcomers can enter safely into the workforce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-9c812c8\" id=\"strong-2-spousal-open-work-permit-sowp-restrictions-strong\" data-block-id=\"9c812c8\"><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><strong>2. Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) Restrictions<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective January 21, 2025, eligibility for SOWP has narrowed significantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For Spouse Students: <\/strong>Eligibility is now limited to spouses of students enrolled in masters program(16 months), doctoral programs, or professional degree programs ( medical, engineering, and law). Most college diplomas and short-term courses no longer support a spouse&#8217;s OWP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spouses of Workers:<\/strong> Most of the time, only spouses of people who work in high-skilled TEER 0 or 1 positions are eligible. Only spouses of people who work in TEER 2 or 3 jobs that are linked to known labour shortages (like healthcare, STEM, or trades) can apply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Permit Validity: <\/strong>For a spouse to be eligible for the principal worker\u2019s permit should have at least 16 months of validity remaining at the time of application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-c21e0a5\" id=\"strong-3-post-graduation-work-permit-pgwp-strong\" data-block-id=\"c21e0a5\"><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><strong>3. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>New criteria have taken effect on November 1, 2024. For the students who are applying for a study permit after that date:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Field of Study Requirement: <\/strong>Colleges and non-degree university graduates must complete a program from one of the 5-demand sectors: Healthcare, STEM, Trade, Agriculture, or Transport.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>University Graduates: <\/strong>Students who are graduating with a bachelor\u2019s, masters or PhD remain eligible up to 3 years of PGWP regardless of their field of study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-2e60f79\" id=\"strong-4-financial-and-operational-updates-strong\" data-block-id=\"2e60f79\"><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><strong>4. Financial and Operational Updates<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These updates introduce stricter financial thresholds and operational standards, ensuring that the foreign workers are economically self-sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Higher Proof of Funds: <\/strong>The applicant now must show $12,960 CAD ( plus tuition and travel) due to the increase in the cost of living.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Implied Status Extension: <\/strong>Workers who submit an extension before their permit expires will now receive 180 days of implied from 120 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raised Salary Thresholds: <\/strong>Most of the new job offers should meet or exceed the minimum median wage of approx <strong>$28.50 per hour<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-da7089c\" id=\"strong-minimum-ielts-required-for-canada-work-permit-strong\" data-block-id=\"da7089c\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Minimum_IELTS_Required_for_Canada_Work_Permit\"><\/span><strong>Minimum IELTS Required for Canada Work Permit<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a work permit in Canada, you need to have an overall IELTS score of at least 6.0. But it can change depending on the job and immigration program you are applying for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are used by Canada to test English skills for immigration purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CLB system divides English skills into four groups: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The average of the four scores gives you your overall score. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): <\/strong>The program is designed for skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to migrate to Canada permanently. The eligibility for FSWP is a minimum of CLB 7 in English. Classification (NOC) according to your training, education, experience, and responsibilities (TEER):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>TEER 0: <\/strong>Management professions (e.g., managers in advertising, marketing, and public relations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TEER 1: <\/strong>Professions that typically necessitate a university degree (e.g., financial advisors, software engineers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TEER 2: <\/strong>Occupations typically necessitating a college diploma, apprenticeship training (two or more years), or supervisory roles (e.g., computer network and web technicians).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TEER 3: <\/strong>Occupations typically necessitating a college diploma, apprenticeship training (under 2 years), or a minimum of 6 months of on-the-job training (e.g., bakers).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a standard system called the NOC that gives every job in the Canadian labour market a code and a job description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minimum IELTS score you need to get a Canada work permit from the CEC depends on the NOC level of the job you&#8217;re applying for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NOC A jobs (highly skilled):<\/strong> Require a CLB 7 in language skills, which means you need to get at least a 6.0 in each section of the IELTS test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NOC B jobs (skilled):<\/strong> You need to be able to speak
