class="ez-toc-section-end">

TUM does not publish an official acceptance rate. The 8–10% figure circulating on education sites is a third-party estimate, not a TUM-released number. Here is what that means for your application.

First, the truth is that TUM does not make its acceptance rate public. The university’s own admissions page discusses an aptitude test process rather than a fixed number of students eligible for admission. The 8-10% figure circulating on education sites is not an official number from TUM. It is a third-party estimate based on the number of applications and enrollments.

Second, the process for getting into a German university is different from that of the US or UK. TUM’s official admissions procedures page says that most programs use a point-based aptitude test, also known as an Eignungsverfahren, or EFV. Your GPA, grades in specific subjects, how well your classes overlap, and your motivation all go into scoring your application. You will either be accepted right away, invited to a 20-minute interview or written test, or turned down, depending on how many points you have. There is no set limit on the number of seats in many programs; anyone who meets the requirements is accepted. So, the “acceptance rate” in those programs doesn’t depend on how many other applicants there are; it depends on whether your profile meets the standard.

TUM had more than 52,000 students in the Winter Semester of 2025-26. About 45% of them were from outside of Germany. That international diversity is real, but it doesn’t make the academic bar lower.

Counselor insight: The 8–10% estimate is most useful for English-taught Master’s programs in CS, Data Science, and Management, which have a lot of applicants from all over the world. If you have a good CGPA and have done well in school, you have a better chance of getting into programs with fewer applicants, like Life Sciences, Land Management, and Environmental Engineering. Do not use the university’s overall number to judge a specific program.

TUM Acceptance Rate by Program: Where Indian Students Are Most and Least Competitive

The following table displays the expected ranges of acceptance and the most competitive scores for each program. On the German scale, 1.0 is the best grade, and 4.0 is a pass. On a scale of 10 points, an Indian CGPA of about 8.5 usually equals a German grade of 1.8 to 2.0, which is satisfactory enough for most programs. A CGPA of 7.5 is equal to about 2.5, which is the lowest score needed to be seriously considered for competitive programs.

TUM also verifies your degree against the Anabin database and assesses the extent of its coverage. You might not get into your desired Master’s program even if you have a high CGPA if your B.Tech. or BSc doesn’t cover the required subjects. This is the step where you look at the curriculum. There is a form that you fill out to match up your Indian college credits with the modules that TUM needs. It is not a given.

The language requirements depend on the language used to teach the program. You need either an IELTS 6.5+ or a TOEFL iBT 88+ to get into programs taught in English. A Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate may be enough for TUM to accept your application instead of a test score if at least half of your undergraduate degree was taught in English. Find out how this works to study in Germany without IELTS. Verify your German skills with TestDaF 4×4 or DSH-2 (C1 level).

Decision Framework: Which Student Are You?

If you are in your last year of BTech and will graduate in May or June 2026 with a CGPA of 8.5 or higher and have not yet started your APS certificate, your target intake is Winter 2026–27 (starting in October 2026), but the window is tight. You needed to start the APS process in November or December 2025 for a comfortable timeline because it takes 4–5 months. If you haven’t already, please consider starting this week and applying to TUM at the same time using your provisional certificate. TUM’s aptitude assessment procedures say that for some Master’s programs, you can send in your final documents by the end of your second semester after you enroll. Call the office of the program you want to get into to make sure this option is available.

If you graduated in 2024 or 2025 and have your degree in hand, a CGPA between 7.5 and 8.0, and one to two years of relevant work experience or internship history, you can look for Management and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or Finance and Information Management programs in Winter 2026-27. At TUM, work experience does not contribute to your GPA, but it is included in the “motivation” section of your points score for aptitude assessment interviews. Make sure that your curriculum analysis shows that the subjects are well-aligned.

If you want to study Informatics, Data Engineering, or AI and your CGPA is below 8.0, TUM is a reach application. Add RWTH Aachen (which has a 10–15% acceptance rate for similar programs) and TU Berlin to your list. You might want to use the extra time to study for the GATE or GRE tests, which are important for TUM’s point system for these programs. If the delay means that you won’t be able to finish your Master’s degree by May 31 and your certificate won’t arrive in time, you might want to try for the Summer Semester 2027 (applications open November 2026) or the Winter Semester 2027–28. The idea that Germany is “almost free” no longer applies to TUM. Before you write a word of your motivation letter, make sure you have downloaded the aptitude assessment law for the program you want to apply to, checked to see if the GRE or GMAT is required, and matched your course requirements to TUM’s module requirements.

Verified by LeapScholar’s counseling team. The actual rate is thought to be less than 15% for Master’s programs taught in English that are in high demand in CS, Data Engineering, and Management. Your chances depend on your CGPA, how well you do on TUM’s aptitude test, how much of your classes overlap, and how well you do in languages.

Does TUM publish an official acceptance rate?

No, TUM’s admissions pages on tum.de talk about an aptitude test based on criteria, not a set number of spots or a public acceptance rate. At least an 8.5 in AI, data science, and informatics is what you should aim for. It is possible to get into a less competitive program with a CGPA of 7.5 if your curriculum analysis shows that a lot of your classes overlap, and your motivation letter is tailored to the program. In most programs, TUM is not likely to be below 7.5.

Does TUM need Indian students to take the GRE?

Some programs need the GRE, but not all of them do.
