It is a postgraduate-entry program: you first complete a 3 to 4 year bachelor&#8217;s degree (usually in a life science or related field), then apply separately to medical school. The MD itself takes 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. McMaster University and the University of Calgary run accelerated 3-year MD programs; most other schools run 4-year programs with pre-clerkship and clerkship phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, an Indian student going the MBBS in Canada route typically spends 7 to 8 years studying before residency even starts: 3 to 4 years for the bachelor&#8217;s degree, plus 3 to 4 years for the MD. Residency then adds another 2 to 7 years depending on the specialty. That effectively removes the University of Toronto, McMaster University, Queen&#8217;s University, Western University, the University of Ottawa, and Toronto Metropolitan University from the list of options for Indian applicants, schools that older guides still list as top choices for international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside Ontario, the picture hasn&#8217;t changed as dramatically, but it was never generous to begin with. Only a small number of Canadian medical schools accept international applicants at all, and the seats available are typically in the single digits per university, per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Counselor insight:<\/em><\/strong><em> If you&#8217;re working from a college list you saved more than a year ago or from a competitor blog, verify every university&#8217;s current international-admission policy directly on its admissions page before you spend money on MCAT prep or application fees.
