Its official name is the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), and Koreans call it Suneung (\uc218\ub2a5). It is set by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.nl\/node\/1628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE)<\/a> and held once a year in November. In the 2026 CSAT (held November 2025), 4,93,896 candidates sat the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One naming detail confuses almost every Indian student. This article uses the official names throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CSAT is not related to the US SAT run by the College Board. It is closer in spirit to JEE or NEET:<\/strong> a single, high-stakes national test that decides regular (jeongsi) admissions at Korean universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-37fc994\" id=\"strong-do-indian-students-need-the-korean-sat-exam-strong\" data-block-id=\"37fc994\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_Indian_Students_Need_the_Korean_SAT_Exam\"><\/span><strong>Do Indian Students Need the Korean SAT Exam?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most Indian students, the answer is no. Korean universities run separate international admission tracks for foreign nationals, and these do not ask for CSAT scores. Instead, they assess your Class 12 marks, a study plan, recommendation letters, and a language score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seoul National University is a clear example. Its International Admissions I track is for applicants where neither the student nor their parents hold Korean citizenship, and it asks for either TOPIK level 3 or higher, or <a href=\"https:\/\/leapscholar.com\/blog\/toefl-ibt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TOEFL iBT<\/a> 80 \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/leapscholar.com\/exams\/ielts\/practice-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IELTS<\/a> 6.0 \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/en.teps.or.kr\/about_teps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TEPS<\/a> 551 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.snu.ac.kr\/admission\/overview\/faq\/admission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SNU admissions FAQ<\/a>). Mostly students of Indian origin who have lived and studied in Korea for years, are fluent in Korean, and want to compete for domestic regular-admission seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Counselor insight:<\/em><\/strong><em> Many students write to us after watching Suneung videos online and assume they must clear it to study in Korea. In practice, the Indian students we place in Korean universities apply through international tracks with IELTS or TOPIK. If you are fluent in Korean and living in Korea, CSAT becomes a real option. First, Korean History is compulsory: if you do not sit it, your entire CSAT is invalidated and no scores are issued. Second, English, Korean History and Second Foreign Language are graded on an absolute scale, while Korean, Mathematics and Inquiry are graded relative to other candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your score report shows a standard score, percentile, and grade (1 to 9) for Korean, Mathematics and Inquiry. For English, Korean History and Second Foreign Language, it shows the grade only. With breaks, the full exam day runs close to 8 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KICE also links about 50% of questions to EBS (Korea&#8217;s public education broadcaster) textbooks and lectures, which is why Korean students treat EBS material as core prep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-eae89be\" id=\"strong-korean-sat-english-exam-format-and-grading-strong\" data-block-id=\"eae89be\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Korean_SAT_English_Exam_Format_and_Grading\"><\/span><strong>Korean SAT English Exam: Format and Grading<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Korean SAT English exam has 45 questions in 70 minutes: 17 listening and 28 reading. There is no speaking or writing section, which makes it very different from IELTS or TOEFL. Grade 1 needs a raw score of 90 or above out of 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not assume the English paper is easy just because you are fluent. The reading passages draw on philosophy, economics, and science, and questions test logical inference (sentence ordering, blank-filling, and identifying the flow of an argument).
