In September 2026, NMC’s reply to a grievance about Georgian MD graduates was circulated on social media with claims that the degree is “invalid,” which understandably alarmed families among the roughly 20,000 Indian students enrolled in Georgian medical universities since 2021. Georgia’s own quality authority, NCEQE, responded with a statement confirming that its six-year MD program (360 ECTS. The internship year was completed at the university’s own hospitals) matches FMGL’s same-institution requirement and that its graduates receive an official registration certificate with the right to practice. The point in dispute was about the exact terms of early-career practice in Georgia itself, not whether the degree qualifies for FMGL purposes.

This doesn’t change anything in the NMC table below: the rules are the rules either way. But if you or your family have seen this circulating online, it’s worth reading the primary statements rather than a screenshot. (The Tribune, 22 Oct 2026; Republic World, 21 Oct 2026)

Is an MBBS Abroad Valid in India, and Can You Practice Here Afterwards?

The biggest myth is that any MBBS abroad counts in India; NMC accepts it only if the course meets its 2021 FMGL Regulations and you pass a screening test. NMC is the National Medical Commission, India’s regulator for medical education, and the FMGL (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Regulations are its rules for doctors trained abroad. The screening test is the exam an Indian with a foreign first medical degree must clear before registering here.

So if your worry is “will this degree count back home?” the answer is yes, as long as every step below happens in order. Skip one, and the degree becomes a costly wall decoration.

Abroad: finish a course of at least 54 months, then an internship (a supervised year of hospital training) of at least 12 months, both at the same university.

Back home: pass the FMGE exam, which is the screening test in use now, then complete a 12-month internship in India.

Finally: get permanent registration, which is the license to practice independently in India.

If you’re still choosing where to study, compare the best countries for MBBS before you look at any single university.

NMC Rules for MBBS Abroad: What Your Course Must Include

A common mistake is checking only the course length; NMC’s 2021 regulations set several conditions, from 54 months of study to finishing within 10 years of joining.
