Scholarships

For most postgraduate programs at Oxford, there are two funding rounds: a December deadline (typically 2 December for a given entry year) and a January deadline (typically 8 January). Submitting your course application by the relevant round automatically enters you into consideration for the Clarendon Fund, Felix Scholarship, Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship, Oxford-Indira Gandhi Scholarship, and dozens of other Oxford-named awards with no separate form required.

Miss these deadlines, and you are ineligible for most major Oxford University scholarships for that cycle, regardless of your academic record.

Counselor insight: In our experience at LeapScholar, at least 30% of Indian students who miss the Clarendon or Felix eligibility window do so because they applied in a later round without realizing there was an earlier funding deadline. Your course may still be open, but the scholarship window will have closed. Build your entire Oxford timeline around the December or January funding deadline, not the final course deadline.

<img loading="lazy" It covers 100% of university and college fees plus a living grant of at least Rs.26.6 lakh (£20,780) per year, set at the UKRI minimum doctoral stipend rate for 2025-26 and reviewed annually.

Any student applying for a full-time or part-time Master’s or DPhil by the December or January deadline is automatically considered. There is no separate form. Academics in your department nominate the strongest candidates to their division based on academic record, research aptitude, and motivation. Clarendon is merit-based only; financial need plays no part.

Counselor insight: The absence of a separate form creates a false sense of ease. It covers 100% of course fees, a living allowance of around Rs.24.3 lakh (£19,000) per year as stated on the official Felix Scholarships page, and one return economy flight between India and the UK.

To be eligible, you must be an Indian citizen applying for a full-time Master’s or DPhil, and you must not have previously studied a course at the same level as the one you are applying to. No separate application is needed; submit your course application by the December or January deadline, and you are automatically considered. Decisions are communicated by the end of May 2026 for entry in 2026.

Counselor insight: This is the most underused fully funded award available to Indian students at Oxford. The scholarship is subject-specific and changes annually; for 2026 entry, approved Oxford courses were listed on the CSC website. Eligibility: Indian citizen permanently resident in India, upper-second-class degree minimum, and must not have spent more than one year in a high-income country. A separate application to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission was required; the 2026 entry window ran 12 November to 9 December 2025. This is your real deadline, not the final course deadline. Every automatic scholarship (Clarendon, Felix, Weidenfeld-Hoffmann) closes at this point.

Step 2: Apply to external scholarships first if applicable. For the Rhodes Scholarship, apply to the Rhodes Trust before you apply to Oxford; the 2026 India window opens 1 June 2026. For Chevening, apply in the annual August-to-November window. For the GREAT Scholarship, you should apply via the British Council at the same time as your Oxford application.

Step 3: Complete the Oxford graduate application form. Apply at apply.ox.ac.uk. In the Funding section, you will see a list of scholarships matched to your nationality, course, and level of study. Clarendon and Felix’s consideration is automatic. Tick the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann box and upload the required statement if you are applying for that award.

Step 4: Prepare your application documents. At minimum: academic transcripts (all semesters), degree or provisional certificate, IELTS certificate, SOP or research proposal, and two academic references. Brief your referees at least six weeks before the deadline; they receive a separate online submission link and cannot be rushed at the last minute.

Step 5: Submit by the funding deadline. Submit your complete application, including references, by the December or January funding deadline for your course. A partial submission before the deadline does not preserve your scholarship eligibility. The entire application must be in.

Counselor insight: One detail most Indian students miss: the Oxford graduate application system does not send a confirmation that your referees have submitted. Log in and check the reference status section actively in the days before your deadline. A missing reference is the most common reason an otherwise complete application falls through.

Which Oxford University Scholarship Should You Target?

If you are a final-year BTech student graduating May 2026 with a CGPA of 9.2 or above: Apply for a Master’s at Oxford by the January 2027 deadline for Clarendon consideration. MSc Advanced Computer Science fees are approximately Rs.48 lakh; the Clarendon covers the tuition plus a Rs.26.6 lakh living grant. Apply for the GREAT Scholarship simultaneously as a lower-competition backup.

If you completed a Master’s in India and want to do a DPhil at Oxford: The Felix Scholarship is open to you; your degree was completed in India, not at the same level abroad. Clarendon is also fully available. Check whether your department has Oxford-named scholarships in addition to these two, as many science and social science departments hold separate funding pools.

If you are a working professional aged 22–25 with two-plus years of experience and a leadership track record: Target Rhodes first (deadline 23 July 2026 for 2026 entry), then Chevening (November 2026 for 2027 entry). Both weight leadership over raw academic scores, which gives you an edge over straight-from-college applicants. If neither works, apply to Oxford for 2027 entry with Clarendon consideration in the January round.

See also: UK Intakes 2026-27: Which One Is Right for You?

What to Do When Things Go Wrong

You missed the December or January funding deadline: Your course application may still be valid for later rounds, but you are no longer eligible for Clarendon, Felix, or Weidenfeld-Hoffmann this cycle. Do not withdraw. Apply on merit and anchor your next cycle to the funding deadline from the start.

Your IELTS score is below 7.5: Oxford will not waive this requirement for scholarship purposes. Retake before submitting. If your entire schooling was in English, request the medium of instruction exemption through the admissions system, but factor in that it is not guaranteed.

You were admitted to Oxford but rejected for Clarendon: This is a common outcome. It means you are academically qualified, but the scholarship pool was taken by stronger profiles. Accept the offer if you can fund it through alternative means: GREAT Scholarship, college bursary, or an education loan. The SBI Global Ed-Vantage scheme covers overseas study at premier institutions, including Oxford, with loan amounts up to Rs.1.5 crore (extendable to Rs.3 crore for top-tier institutions), interest rates starting at around 10.15–11.15% per annum for general borrowers, a moratorium period covering your course duration plus 12 months, and a repayment tenure of up to 15 years. Female students receive a 0.50% interest rate concession. Apply through your nearest SBI branch or at sbi.co.in. A Clarendon rejection in one cycle does not affect future eligibility.

Counselor insight: Apply by the January deadline even if your application is not perfect. A solid application in January beats a polished one in March every time, because the scholarship pool closes after January. Submit, then improve for the next cycle if needed.

3 Things Every Indian Student Must Know About the Oxford University Scholarship

1. The funding deadline is not the same as the course deadline. For every automatic Oxford University scholarship (Clarendon, Felix, Weidenfeld-Hoffmann), your eligibility is determined by the December or January funding deadline specific to your course, not the final admissions round. Go to your course page on ox.ac.uk, note that date, and build your entire application timeline around it.

2. The Felix Scholarship is the most underused fully funded Oxford University scholarship for Indian students. If you have not previously studied at the same academic level and cannot fund your Oxford place without support, you are automatically considered the moment you submit a timely application. No separate form. No extra step. Most Indian students who qualify do not realize they are already in the pool.

3. A strong leadership record opens doors that grades alone cannot. The Rhodes Scholarship gives six fully funded places to Indian students each year, and Chevening runs on similar criteria. If you have two or more years of work experience and a documented service track record, these external awards are as realistic a route to Oxford as the academic scholarships.
