There is no MBBS in the USA. The degree is called MD, Doctor of Medicine. And unlike MBBS in India, it is not something you do straight after Class 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is how it works in the US. You first spend four years doing a science undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or something along those lines. This is called pre-med. Only after that can you apply to medical school, which is another four years. Then comes residency, which runs three to seven years depending on the specialty you pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when a student says they want to do MBBS in the USA after 12th, what they are really looking at is a minimum of eight years before they can practice on their own. Family medicine is three years. Surgery is five. Neurosurgery goes up to seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, from Class 12, the absolute earliest you are practicing on your own is year eight. And that is only if everything goes right: no failed exams, no reapplication cycles, and no gaps in the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you already have an Indian MBBS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two to four years from when you start USMLE prep to your first day of residency. The process is significantly shorter and significantly less expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We sit with a lot of families who have been researching the process for months and still have not mapped out the full timeline, year by year. When we do it together, they always react the same: they had no idea it took this long.
