The course is offered with three streams: Performance, Contemporary Composition, and Community Music. The Performance stream focuses on perfecting performances to industry standards across jazz, contemporary, or classical genres, including conducting. The Community Music stream prepares students for roles as ensemble directors or working with community organisations serving diverse or marginalised groups, with practical experience in pedagogy and community placements.

Applicants need an accredited undergraduate degree in music or a related discipline, or relevant industry experience supported by performance or composition portfolios. Performance candidates must demonstrate established technique through an audition, presenting three contrasting pieces or a portfolio. Composition applicants should showcase original works, while community music candidates must demonstrate relevant practical and academic skills, including an audition or discussion of community experience. International students must meet English proficiency requirements of IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.

Graduates of the Master of Music can pursue roles such as performers, composers, arrangers, sound designers, songwriters, ensemble directors, conductors, chamber musicians, community music facilitators, studio teachers, session musicians, music administrators, or worship leaders. The program also prepares students for activities like gigging, recording, creating festivals, starting studios, composing for films, or teaching in higher education. Many alumni work professionally within orchestras, chamber ensembles, or community organizations, and some venture into music entrepreneurship or festival creation.
